Commanders Camp — Aug 23: Kaliakmanis Throws for 162 in Detroit

Athan Kaliakmanis, a seventh-round rookie fighting for the last quarterback spot, went 11 of 14 for 162 yards in Saturday's 17 to 13 loss to the Detroit Lions — without taking a sack, and with a 55-yard completion to Nick Nash and a 30-yarder to Jaden Bradley, per Zach Selby at the team's site. The line matters more than a preseason line usually does, because the job behind Jayden Daniels got very real this week. Dan Quinn told reporters Sunday that Marcus Mariota's sprained MCL will keep the backup out for the rest of the preseason — "We're optimistic that he'll be ready for the start of the regular season," in remarks carried by USA Today's Commanders Wire — and then closed the door on outside help: "We don't anticipate anybody else coming in. It'll allow more reps over the next couple of weeks with Sam and Athan in that spot." Sam Hartman took his reps Saturday too, going 9 of 11 for 67 yards but losing a fumble on a strip by Detroit's Derrick Moore, per Tim Twentyman at the Lions' site. Quinn's postgame read on the pair, in the transcript published by Commanders On SI: "I did see some explosive plays that were shots down the field."

The rest of the game, honestly framed. Daniels started and played exactly one series — three snaps, a three-and-out, zero for one, and a 10-yard sack by DJ Wonnum — and Quinn said afterward the single series was always the plan, adding that Daniels is "throwing an excellent camp," per Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk and the Commanders On SI transcript. Washington held out 15 players, down from 26 in the opener — Mariota, Laremy Tunsil and Daron Payne among them, per the team's announcement — and Detroit rested starters of its own, including Jahmyr Gibbs and Isiah Pacheco, per Twentyman, so most of this was depth against depth. The ground game was the night's clear failure: 35 rushing yards as a team, Kaytron Allen held to 30 on 10 carries per the CBS Sports box score, and Quinn didn't dress it up — "there's a lot to be desired run game-wise."

The defense keeps making its new coordinator's argument for him. Amik Robertson forced a fumble on the game's second play, Quan Martin intercepted his second pass of the preseason, and rookie edge Joshua Josephs turned a fumble recovery into a touchdown as part of a five-sack night, per Selby, whose team-site count has the unit at six takeaways across two preseason games — most of Saturday's damage coming against Josh Dobbs and Luke Altmyer, so file it as August evidence. The individual stories were better than the scoreboard. Maurice Hurst Jr., a veteran defensive tackle signed Tuesday, had five tackles, two for loss and two sacks in his Washington debut, and linebacker Ale Kaho led everyone with six tackles, per Bryan Manning at Commanders Wire. Rookie receiver Antonio Williams added 41 receiving yards including a contested grab, also per Manning. Quinn's postgame line on Robertson: "a legit dog-ass competitor." Detroit's one sustained answer was a 50-yard touchdown run by Dobbs.

Now the ledger, where the week's worst news lives. Jer'Zhan Newton had surgery Thursday in New York to repair a torn pectoral muscle — first reported by John Keim at ESPN — and the young defensive tackle is expected to miss a significant stretch of the season; Quinn had said Wednesday the injury "could sideline Newton for a while," per Selby. The Hurst signing was the direct response, part of a Tuesday batch that also brought in linebacker Krys Barnes, running back Craig Reynolds and tight end Tre' McKitty, per Adam La Rose at Pro Football Rumors. The other unsettled spot is the middle of the line: center Nick Allegretti and tight end John Bates returned to practice Tuesday from their injuries, per Quinn via Manning — yet Allegretti still sat Saturday, and Quinn said afterward, per Ahmed Ghafir at Roundtable Sports, "We've got work to do to figure out where we want to get to [at] center." That is the coach volunteering uncertainty at the position that runs Daniels' protection calls, eight days before cutdown. Briefly, the rest: Odafe Oweh, K'Lavon Chaisson and Jordan Magee sat the week with calf, knee and shoulder injuries, Tim Settle hit what Quinn called "a big marker" in his recovery, per Selby, and the roster churn included kicker Jake Moody waived — the job now belongs to undrafted rookie Drew Stevens — punter Matt Haack released, and Jerome Ford and River Cracraft moved to injured reserve, per La Rose.

Back in July we previewed Washington as the rare bounce the market had already paid for — two flags pointing up, a price that assumed them, and the real variance living in two first-time coordinators and one healthy franchise quarterback. We've been checking that preview against camp every week, and this week pulled it in both directions: the defense keeps taking the ball away for Daronte Jones, and Daniels is healthy and, per his coach, throwing an excellent camp — but the insurance behind him is now a second-year passer and a rookie by the team's own choice, and the center spot is unsettled by the coach's own account. One more check before the season.

What to watch: whether Allegretti takes center snaps in Wednesday's joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens ahead of Friday's finale, and the cutdown call behind Daniels — Kaliakmanis made it a real decision Saturday, and Sunday, August 30 forces it. We'll check after cut day.
