Blake Corum — Week 2: Twelve Carries, Five First Downs

Corum carried 12 times for 79 yards and five first downs, an even split with Kyren Williams's 12, and his carries were worth plus 2.3 expected points against Williams's minus 3.9. He also caught his only target for 13 yards to the New York eight, the first reception of his season, in a 28–6 win over the Giants.

Nothing to nothing, two 14 left in the first quarter, first and 10 at the New York 43. Blake Corum went up the middle for 16 yards to the 27. +1.1 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 5.4 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. It was the longest run anyone had managed to that point, and the drive it extended ended in the Davante Adams touchdown that opened the scoring with 19 seconds left in the quarter.
The line: 12 carries, 79 yards, five first downs, seven of the 12 successful, +2.3 expected points on the carries, and a longest of 18. The carries went one, two, 16, five, three, one, six, 13, one, 18, eight and five. Four before halftime for 24 yards, eight after for 55. One third-down carry, third and one at the Los Angeles 29 in the first quarter, up the middle for two and the conversion. The one at the New York 22 with 11 21 left in the fourth was four yards before Jevon Holland knocked the ball out, and Corum recovered it himself at the 21, so it went into the book as one. None of his 12 came inside the 20; Williams had two of those.
He was also thrown to, which is new. Second and nine at the New York 21 with 10 34 left in the fourth, short left, six yards behind the line of scrimmage, 13 yards to the eight and a first down, worth +1.3. It was his first catch of the season, on his first target of the season, and it set up the drive's touchdown two snaps later.
The split was down the middle: 12 designed runs each for Corum and Williams out of the Rams' 24, with Matthew Stafford's one scramble making 25 rush plays and a hundred 66 yards, third-most of the 32 teams in Week Two. Through two games Corum has 22 carries for a hundred 33 yards to Williams's 23 for a hundred 26, and no touchdowns to Williams's two.
Back in June the preview put Corum on the watchlist and said it would not underwrite unassigned carries: a price of the 30-fifth back for a promotion the Rams kept hinting at and never announced, 5.1 yards a carry over a hundred 45 carries that the preview called real, and eight catches in a whole season as the hole in the profile. Week One was 10 carries for 54 and no targets. Week Two was an even split, more yards than the starter, better expected points than the starter, and the first target. That is two games of the promotion arriving without being announced, which is not the same as having arrived. Los Angeles is at the Broncos on Sunday night the 20-seventh.
