26 to 21, Bills, a minute 55 left, third and five at the Buffalo 23. Drake Maye threw deep right for Efton Chism, and Chism caught it in the end zone. +3.6 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 19 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it, the biggest positive swing for either offense all day. On the two-point try Maye found Rhamondre Stevenson, 10 and a half more points, 29 to 26. The drive had started at the New England 27 with four 21 left: Hunter Henry for 14, Romeo Doubs for 12, Chism for 19, then the touchdown. Buffalo got the ball back, and Woodson intercepted Josh Allen four snaps later.
The line: 22 of 37, 269 yards, three touchdowns, one interception, one sack, +10 expected points on 38 pass plays. Eight of 15 for a hundred 11 before halftime, 14 of 22 for a hundred 58 after. Two touchdowns went to Doubs, each on a drive he had kept alive on fourth down: 15 yards on fourth and three in the first quarter, then the 14-yard score, and nine on fourth and two in the third, then the two-yard score that put New England ahead 21 to 17.
The two giveaways came in the first half. With 10 14 left in the second quarter, second and nine at the Buffalo 23, tied at seven, he was strip-sacked and Buffalo recovered: −5.4 expected points. With 16 seconds left, tied at 14, one snap after New England recovered a Buffalo fumble, he threw short left for Doubs and Alford intercepted, returning it to the New England nine; Buffalo kicked a field goal. On the ground, four scrambles for 55 yards, the longest 26 to the Buffalo one, and Stevenson scored on the next snap. Eight carries for 54 yards counting two kneel-downs.
Back in June the preview's case for Maye was efficiency. The first three weeks did not show it: 51 of 80, one touchdown pass, six interceptions, and three sacks in each game. Sunday was three touchdowns, one interception and one sack. Four games: four touchdown passes, seven interceptions, and the first game this season New England's passing finished above zero by expected points.
