Drake Maye beat the Jets with three touchdown passes and no turnovers of his own: 18 of 32, 235 yards, 3 touchdowns, no interceptions, no sacks. He was worth +7.8 expected points added (EPA) on 35 dropbacks, +0.22 per dropback. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position.
The play that put New England ahead for good came first. Down 3-0 with 4:18 left in the first quarter, second and 10 at the Jets 42, he threw deep right to Romeo Doubs for a 42-yard touchdown and 7-3, +4.1 EPA and +10.3 points of win probability. He closed the half the same way: up 10-3 with 20 seconds left, third and 9 at the Jets 9, he found DeMario Douglas for a touchdown and 17-3, +3.8 EPA. Early in the fourth, up 17-13, third and 3 at the Jets 7, Hunter Henry caught his third touchdown for 23-13.
Third downs carried the second half. Up 17-13 late in the third, third and 10 at the New England 46, a 12-yard pass to Kyle Williams was worth +2.0 EPA and +6.9 points of win probability. Up 23-16 in the fourth, Henry turned third and 13 into a 15-yard gain, +2.4 EPA. The one blemish came after a catch: Douglas fumbled at the end of a 39-yard gain on third and 6, and Minkah Fitzpatrick returned it 20 yards, -2.4 EPA. His three scrambles added +1.2 EPA, the longest for 21 yards.
He has gone two straight games without an interception. Through Week 5 he had +32.7 EPA on 180 dropbacks, +0.18 per dropback, with 8 touchdown passes and 7 interceptions. His completion percentage over expected (CPOE), how often he completed passes against what their difficulty predicted, was -1.9, against +6.7 through Week 5.
