Jacoby Brissett took the Arizona Cardinals' opening series Thursday night in Las Vegas and threw five passes. All five were caught, for 44 yards, and the last one was a seven-yard touchdown to Marvin Harrison Junior, per the Associated Press recap carried at CBS Sports. AZCentral's charting matched it exactly: five for five, 44 yards, one touchdown. One series, then done, which was the plan all along. Head coach Mike LaFleur told Darren Urban at the team's website on August eleventh that the starters would play one drive, a maximum of two for the main guys. Jacoby Brissett got the treatment of a main guy.

Back in June, our preview of Brissett came down to a simple split: the throwing was starter-caliber, a career-best season delivered behind a bad roster that let him get sacked 43 times, but the open question was whether Arizona would actually treat him like the starter while the two sides argued over his contract. We said the production said starter and the paycheck still said bridge.

This week, the field answered louder than the front office. Brissett started, ran the first unit, and was perfect on the series. The whole quarterback room caught the wave: Cardinals quarterbacks, Brissett and Gardner Minshew combined, went 15 of 15 for 123 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, per the Associated Press. Arizona won 27 to 14, the first win of the LaFleur era. No new reporting surfaced on the contract this window, so the paperwork question we flagged in June stays open, but nothing in the usage suggests it is bleeding onto the field.

Does the June read hold? CONFIRMED — the team is handling Jacoby Brissett as the unquestioned starter, and the one series he played looked exactly like the quarterback the June numbers described.

Two things to watch before the Dallas game on Saturday, August 20-second, per the beat's schedule note: whether Brissett gets the same short, scripted leash or a second series, and who takes the quarterback reps right behind him, because the order of the backup work is Arizona telling you the rest of the plan. We'll check next Sunday.
