Jacoby Brissett Camp Update — August 23: Sitting With the Entrenched Starters

2026 NFL Season · Sunday, Aug 23

Brissett did not play a snap against the Cowboys, and that was the plan — Mike LaFleur sat him with the entrenched veterans while Gardner Minshew started and played the half. A quarterback the staff protects in late August is a quarterback the staff considers its starter.

Jacoby Brissett's week in games was zero snaps, and the zero is the story. Ahead of Saturday's game against Dallas, head coach Mike LaFleur told Darren Urban at the team website that Brissett would sit while Gardner Minshew started and played at least a half — the same treatment given to what Urban's report described as the entrenched veterans, the group LaFleur holds out of exhibitions. Minshew took the assignment and went 19 of 23 for 177 yards in a 34 to 13 loss defined by Arizona penalties, per the Associated Press, with Kedon Slovis mopping up and rookie Carson Beck still sidelined by his rib injury. Two Cardinals touchdowns in Minshew's half were wiped out by flags on one drive, which is a team problem, not a quarterback-room problem.

Two weeks ago he got the main-guy script in Las Vegas — one series, five for five with a touchdown. This week he got the other half of main-guy status: held out entirely while the backups played four quarters. Back in June the open question on Brissett was whether Arizona would treat starter-caliber throwing like a starter while the two sides argued over his contract; the treatment keeps saying yes, and no new contract reporting surfaced this window.

The room behind him also kept its shape: Minshew clearly the second quarterback by usage, Slovis third in line Saturday, and Beck — the rookie the December conversation is about — still without a practice since the Hall of Fame Game.

Watch two things before rosters cut to 53 on Sunday, August thirtieth: whether Brissett plays at all in Friday's preseason finale at Green Bay, and what cutdown does to the quarterback count behind him. We'll check after cut day.
