29 to 20, 49ers, eight 38 left in the fourth quarter, first and 10 at the Arizona 32. Jacoby Brissett was sacked for eight by Keion White. What followed was the drive of his day. Seven to Trey McBride on second and 18. 19 deep middle to Marvin Harrison on third and 11, +2.5 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — Arizona's most valuable completion of the game. Two yards up the middle himself on third and one. 14 to Kendrick Bourne on third and one, eight more to Bourne, four to McBride on third and two at the eight, three to McBride to the one, and then Brissett up the middle for the touchdown with two 55 left, worth 3.3 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. Four third downs on the drive, all converted. The kick made it 29 to 27, and San Francisco scored on the next possession.
The line: 38 completions on 52 throws, one of them a spike to stop the clock, 280 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, two sacks for eight yards. Leaving out the spike, 53 pass plays were worth +11.2 expected points, sixth among the 28 teams that have played this week. 20 of 29 for a hundred 37 before halftime; 18 of 22 for a hundred 43 after, not counting the spike. The longest completion was 19 yards. He threw two passes that travelled 20 or more yards in the air, both in the first quarter, both incomplete. The touchdown throws were five yards to Michael Wilson on second and five in the third quarter, caught behind the line, and one yard to Jeremiyah Love on second and one early in the fourth. On third down he had 13 pass plays and five conversions; Arizona converted nine of 18 third downs; both fourth-down completions went to Wilson and moved the chains, and a third fourth down was converted by a pass interference flag. He ran four times for four yards and three first downs, the touchdown one of them; a sneak from the one early in the fourth got nothing.
The ball went 17 times to Wilson, 11 to McBride, five each to Harrison and Love, four to Tyler Allgeier, three each to Bourne and Elijah Higgins, and once each to two others. 52 throws are his most since he threw 57 against these same 49ers last season.
Back in June the preview put Brissett on the watchlist — the seventeenth quarterback per game a year ago, overlooked because of a contract standoff and a bridge label. Week 1 was +9.0 on the pass plays; Week 2 was −8.1, 95 yards and no completion longer than nine. Sunday was the positive kind again, on the most throws of his season and with no interceptions. Three games: 82 of a hundred 17, 652 yards, four touchdowns, one interception. Two of the three games have been good ones by expected points. Three games settle little. Arizona is at the Giants on Sunday the fourth.
