Justice Hill — Week 1: Six Carries, Two Yards on Third and Five

Hill carried six times for eighteen yards, one of the six successful, and caught his one target for ten yards and a first down in the fourth quarter. His third-and-five carry at the Indianapolis twenty-nine with four fifty-eight left gained two and sent Tyler Loop on for a forty-five-yard field goal. Derrick Henry carried twenty-four times in a 41–23 win over the Colts.

The one play of Justice Hill's Sunday that decided anything was a handoff on third down. Third and five at the Indianapolis 29, four 58 left in the fourth quarter, Ravens up 38 to 23: Hill behind the right guard for two yards, to the 27. −1.2 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and Tyler Loop kicked a 45-yard field goal on the next snap. It was one of five Ravens third downs that did not convert; Baltimore went three of eight on the day.
Six carries, 18 yards, no touchdowns, a long of seven. One of the six was successful, meaning it gained what the down and distance asked for, and the six carries came out at −2.4 expected points. The carries were one yard around left end from the Baltimore 45 with seven 40 left in the half, five off left tackle at two 10, three up the middle on second and one with 20 seconds left in the half — a first down, if not a successful play by the measure — then nothing, then the two on third and five, then seven around right end on second and one with two 38 left in the game, the last first down of the afternoon before the kneel-downs. The catch was the best play: second and nine at the Indianapolis 44 with seven oh one left, Lamar Jackson short right, pushed out at the 34 for 10 yards and a first down, +1.1.
He also shows up in the play-by-play twice without the ball. A false start on third and six at the Indianapolis 45 with four 55 left in the third turned it into third and 11, and on the third and 11 that followed, an offensive holding call on Hill was declined because the throw to Chris Moore fell incomplete. That drive ended in a punt. The carry split: Derrick Henry 24, Jackson seven, Hill six, out of 37 Ravens runs.
Back in June the preview's read on Hill was a passing-down back rather than a carrier — RB62 last season over 10 games, about five and a half points a game on catches more than handoffs. Sunday was six handoffs and one target, which is the reverse of that shape, and one target in a game the Ravens threw 25 times says nothing about the role yet. Baltimore is home to the Saints on Sunday the twentieth. The number to watch is targets, not carries.
