Seven to nothing, Ravens, 10 36 left in the second quarter, third and 21 at the New Orleans 39 after an 11-yard sack. Lamar Jackson threw short right to Justice Hill, six yards behind the line, and Hill ran it out of bounds at the 31 for eight. By expected points added — what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — it was worth almost exactly nothing. It moved a field goal try from 57 yards to 49, and the Saints blocked it.
That was one of four touches. The line: two carries, six yards; two targets, two catches, 12 yards; no first downs. The first carry was first and 10 at the New Orleans 28, left end, pushed out for no gain, the snap before the sack. The second was first and 10 at the Baltimore 47 with nine 39 left in the third, right guard for six. The other catch came with 34 seconds left in the half, first and 10 at the New Orleans 26: short left, three yards behind the line, pushed out at the 22 for four. On the next snap Jackson hit Rashod Bateman for the 22-yard touchdown. Both targets came before halftime, and he did not touch the ball in the fourth quarter.
Derrick Henry had 16 of the 18 running back carries and three targets. Hill's two targets came on 31 Baltimore throws.
Back in June the preview's read on Hill was a passing-down back, 60-second at the position over 10 games last season on catches more than carries. Week 1 was six carries and one target, the reverse of that, and the episode said the number to watch was targets. It went from one to two. Through two games that is eight carries and three targets, behind a back who has 40 carries. The role is what the preview said it was, and so far it is small. Baltimore is the road team against the Cowboys on Sunday the 20-seventh, at Maracana Stadium.
