Justice Hill — Week 3: Five Carries, Thirty-Three Yards

Hill carried 5 times for 33 yards, every carry gaining at least 4, and converted a third and five with a 7-yard run in the second quarter; his 11-yarder in the third came on the drive that ended in Lamar Jackson's touchdown throw to Chris Moore. He had no targets, and a no-gain catch was wiped out by a penalty, in a 34–31 win over the Cowboys in Rio de Janeiro.

14 to 10, Ravens, eight oh one left in the half, third and five at the Dallas 38. Justice Hill ran at right guard for seven yards to the 31 and the first down. +1.4 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and two points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. The drive reached the Dallas nine and ended in a Tyler Loop field goal for a 17-to-10 lead.
The line: five carries, 33 yards, one first down, three of the five successful, a little over +2 and a half expected points on the carries; no targets. The carries went seven around left end, four, the seven on third and five, four with 13 seconds left in the half, and 11 — first and 15 at the Dallas 27 after a false start, five oh eight left in the third, up 17 to 13, pushed out at the 16. Two snaps later Jackson threw a four-yard touchdown to Chris Moore. Four carries before halftime for 22 yards, one after for 11. A short catch in the second quarter, for no gain, came back on an ineligible-man-downfield penalty.
The split: five of Baltimore's 36 designed runs; Derrick Henry had 26. Hill's five came out on the plus side and Henry's 26 at −10.8, most of that on four short-yardage stops.
Back in June the preview framed Hill as a receiving back — 21 catches in 10 games last season before a neck injury sent him to injured reserve — and asked how much of that job a new coaching staff would give him. Week 1 was six carries for 18 yards and one catch for 10. Week 2 was two carries and two catches for 18 yards. Sunday was the most rushing yards of his three games and the first with no target. Three games: 13 carries, 57 yards; three targets, three catches, 22 yards. The receiving role June described has not shown up yet; three games settle little. Baltimore is home against the Titans on Sunday the fourth.
