13 to 10, Raiders, 30 seconds left in the third quarter, first and 10 at the Kansas City 16. Kenneth Walker took the handoff through the right guard and was not pushed out of bounds until the Las Vegas eight, 76 yards later. +4.9 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 22 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. It was the largest gain on any Kansas City run, and two snaps into the fourth quarter Patrick Mahomes found Tyquan Thornton for the touchdown that put the Chiefs ahead.
Then the finish. Down 19 to 17 with three 25 left, first and goal at the two after Thornton's 55-yard catch and a penalty, Walker went up the middle for the touchdown. The two-point throw to him fell incomplete. The Raiders fumbled the kickoff, Kansas City recovered at the Las Vegas 22, and on the next snap Walker ran around right end for 22 yards and the score that made it 30 to 19. Two touchdowns, 15 seconds of game clock apart.
The line: 22 carries, a hundred 77 yards, two touchdowns, six first downs, 10 of the 22 successful, +3.7 expected points on the carries; one target, one catch, two yards. The carries went four, two, three, one, nothing, five, nothing, 11, 21, six, seven, two, six, three, 76, −1, three, two, two, 22, one and one. 12 before halftime for 62 yards, 10 after for a hundred 15. Leave out the 76 and the other 21 carries gained a hundred one. The misses came early and short: fourth and two near midfield on the first possession, one yard and the ball went over on downs, and second and two at the Las Vegas two later in the first quarter, no gain, before Thornton scored on third down. The last two came after the onside kick, with Las Vegas spending its last two timeouts.
The split: Walker had 22 of the Chiefs' 25 rush plays. Emmett Johnson did not carry the ball. One target on the 27 throws Mahomes credited to a receiver.
Back in June the preview leaned watchlist on Walker, signed to lead the Kansas City backfield, and named the goal-line role and the passing-down work as the things to watch. Four games: 87 carries, 537 yards, four rushing touchdowns, 19 targets. Sunday's hundred 77 was his most of the season, and the two-yard score was the goal-line job answered. The passing-down half has gone the other way: 10 targets in Week 2, two in Week 3, one on Sunday.
