The Rams' backfield came out of cut day three deep: Kyren Williams, Blake Corum and Ronnie Rivers, per Mykell Mathieu's position-by-position accounting of the initial 53 at The Sporting Tribune. It got there by trade first — Jarquez Hunter went to Miami on Thursday in the deal that brought back receiver Tutu Atwell, per the Associated Press — and then by cut, with Dean Connors waived in the second wave despite a 10-carry, 59-yard finale that included his third receiving touchdown of the preseason, per Blaine Grisak at Sports Illustrated, and Jordan Waters cut in the same wave, per Grisak's roster tracker.
A note on Hunter, whose 12 carries for 68 yards led the Rams' rushing in the Saints exhibition: he was the Rams' own second-year back, and per the Associated Press he never got a regular-season carry as a rookie behind Williams, Corum and Rivers. That is also the ceiling on what his exit means — the trade removes a competitor who had never taken work off Williams, nothing more.
The question that defines Williams's season got no new evidence. The prior episode said that if the starters sat out Thursday's finale, the split question would ride untested into Melbourne — and they sat, per Adam Wells at Bleacher Report, so it does. That is now a third straight week without a charted first-team carry for this backfield, and with no exhibitions left, the first real read arrives in a regular-season game in Australia.
Back in June we called Williams a role bet rather than a talent bet — 259 carries of staff trust in 2025, by our numbers, with his red-zone share protecting the touchdowns even if early-down work erodes toward Corum. Nothing in August tested that framing, and cut day only cleaned up the denominator: the room he holds is now three men. We'll pick this up when there are live snaps to count.
