20 to 17, Eagles, two 47 left in the fourth quarter, second and three at the Los Angeles 32, no huddle. Matthew Stafford threw short right to Puka Nacua five yards past the line, and Nacua took it to the Los Angeles 48, 16 yards, 11 of them after the catch. +8.8 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. Three snaps later, second and two at the Philadelphia 31 with two minutes left, Stafford threw to him at the line of scrimmage and Nacua went 12 yards to the 19, +8.9 more, a first down that set up Kyren Williams's touchdown with a minute 17 left. Rams 24, Eagles 20.
The line: 12 targets, nine catches, a hundred 25 yards, five first downs, no receiving touchdown, +3.7 expected points added on the targets — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. The 28 came first, on third and three at the Los Angeles 38 in the first quarter, down three, deep right to the Philadelphia 34, +12 points of win probability. The 32 came on the 98-yard drive, deep right to the Philadelphia 35. He also ran it in himself, first and goal at the two with two minutes left in the half, around left end for the Rams' first touchdown.
The other side of the ledger: the DeJean interception with 34 seconds left in the half was thrown deep right for him, and it led to an Eagles touchdown. A 24-yard catch in the third quarter came back on offensive pass interference called on Nacua, and an illegal blindside block called on him wiped out a seven-yard Williams run. One of three targets caught before halftime; eight of nine after it.
His 12 targets were second on the Rams to Williams's 13, ahead of Davante Adams's nine, on Stafford's 51 throws.
Back in June the preview read Nacua's season as built on availability and role, with the volume as the part that carries forward. Week One was nine targets. He has no line in Weeks Two and Three. Sunday was 12 targets and the Rams' winning drive. Two games: 21 targets, 14 catches, a hundred 99 yards. The volume the preview counted on was there both times he played.
