Derrick Henry — Week 1: Three Touchdowns, Twenty-Four Carries

Henry carried twenty-four times for a hundred forty-four yards and three touchdowns — four yards in the first quarter, thirty-two in the second, three in the fourth — and caught his one target for nineteen. Twelve of the twenty-four carries were successful and four went for ten or more. He had twenty-four of the Ravens' thirty-seven runs in a 41–23 win over the Colts.

First and 10 at the Indianapolis 32, five 12 left in the second quarter, Ravens up 21 to six. Derrick Henry went off left tackle for 32 yards and a touchdown, on the third snap after Marlon Humphrey had punched the ball away from Jonathan Taylor at the Indianapolis 48. That run was worth +3.1 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and +5 points of win probability. It was the longest play of Henry's day and the second of his three touchdowns.
The full line: 24 carries, a hundred 44 yards, three touchdowns, seven first downs, 12 of the 24 carries successful, meaning they gained what the down and distance asked for. The carries came out at +6.8 expected points, and four of them went for 10 or more: the 32, and then 11 22 on back-to-back snaps from the Baltimore 18 in the third quarter, and 12 on first and 10 from the Indianapolis 19 early in the fourth. The other two touchdowns were short: second and four at the four with four oh eight left in the first, right tackle, for a 13 to six lead; and second and three at the three with 12 50 left in the fourth, left end, for 37 to 16. He was thrown to once, second and six at the Indianapolis 25 with 14 22 left in the half, short left, 19 yards to the six — and that drive ended on fourth and three at the three with an incompletion to Ja'Kobi Lane.
The split was not a split. Baltimore ran 37 times: Henry 24, Lamar Jackson seven, Justice Hill six. 11 of Henry's carries came before halftime for 63 yards and 13 after it for 81, on a second half in which the Ravens ran 20 times and ran eight pass plays. Every Ravens running-back carry inside the Indianapolis 10 was his.
Back in June the preview's read on Henry was a running back turning 32 whose RB7 finish last season had leaned on touchdowns — the least repeatable input there is — with availability, about 88 percent over the years, as the durable layer. The first game handed him three more touchdowns, so the preview's worry did not show up, and one Sunday in September is not the thing that tests an age curve. The carries are the number that would have to hold for the touchdowns to keep coming, and there were 24 of them. Baltimore is home to the Saints on Sunday the twentieth.
