Andy Reid was asked whether Patrick Mahomes will play in Friday's preseason finale against Seattle and answered "we'll see," per Gabe Swartz at KCTV5 — which Swartz notes is itself a break from Reid's long practice of giving his starter at least a little work in every preseason. Mahomes then sat Saturday's 16-to-15 loss in Tampa as planned, watching Justin Fields and Garrett Nussmeier split the scripted quarters, and the Associated Press recap stated the frame directly: Mahomes has been a full participant in training camp practices while recovering from the December knee injury, and the sitting is precaution, not setback.

So the ledger on the summer now reads: every practice, zero game snaps, one possible game left. Camp itself closed this week — the team wrapped its final padded work in St. Joseph on Wednesday, per Swartz — and Mahomes exits it with no reported physical incident of any kind. The receivers he will eventually need were another matter: Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice were both held out again Saturday, per Joshua Schulman at Sports Illustrated's Chiefs site and Pete Sweeney at the Kansas City Star, so whatever timing Mahomes has built with them this summer has happened entirely on the practice field.

Back in June we previewed his season as two bets in one — a clean return from knee reconstruction and an accuracy rebound — and the first bet has spent all of August behaving. The second cannot be tested against air. Whether Kansas City decides a September debut with zero live reps since December is acceptable, or gives him a controlled series Friday, is now the last piece of preseason information available. That decision, plus any change in his practice status before the cutdown to 53 next Sunday, is the whole watch list. We'll check after cut day.
