Patrick Mahomes — Week 2: Forty-Seven Throws, No Interceptions

Mahomes completed 32 of 47 throws for 382 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, took two sacks, and his 49 pass plays were worth plus 13.4 expected points. He converted third and eleven with a 45-yard throw to Tyquan Thornton and third and twelve in overtime with a 30-yarder to Thornton, and three of his five throws labeled deep were complete after none of three in Week 1, in a 33–30 overtime win over the Colts.

27 all, eight 38 left in overtime, third and 12 at the Kansas City 30, one snap after a sack. Patrick Mahomes threw deep right to Tyquan Thornton, 29 yards in the air, 30 yards to the Indianapolis 40. +3.3 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 20.5 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. The drive ended in Harrison Butker's 31-yard field goal. It was the second time he had done it: on third and 11 at the Indianapolis 46 with 10 38 left in the third quarter, down 20 to 17, he went deep right to Thornton for 45 yards to the one, +5.1 expected points, the most valuable pass or run of the game by either team.
The line: 32 completions on 47 throws, 382 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions, two sacks for 11 yards, and +13.4 expected points on 49 pass plays, sixth among the 30 teams that had played in Week 2 when this was written. 14 of 19 for a hundred 38 before halftime; 18 of 28 for 244 after it, three of six for 63 of that in overtime. The touchdowns: 13 yards to Travis Kelce on second and seven with four 40 left in the first quarter, two snaps after Kristian Fulton's interception; one yard to Xavier Worthy with two 28 left in the half; and one yard to Jalen Royals on fourth and goal with eight-oh-six left in the third, after Kenneth Walker had been stopped three times from the one. Five throws the play-by-play labels deep, three complete: 16 to Rashee Rice and the two to Thornton. The two that missed were for Kelce on third and three, −2.1 expected points and the worst Chiefs pass or run of the night by that measure, followed by a missed 51-yard field goal, and for Worthy. On third down: 11 pass plays, 10 throws, six completions, four conversions and one sack. Two scrambles, both in overtime: 13 yards on second and eight to the Indianapolis 14, and four on second and five. In overtime the winning drive turned on third and one: short left to Walker, 22 yards, 36.1 points of win probability.
Where the ball went: Kelce 11 targets, Walker 10, Worthy seven, Rice six, Thornton four, Royals and Emmett Johnson two each, Noah Gray one, and four throws with no intended receiver.
Back in June the preview leaned watchlist on Mahomes — the thirteenth quarterback off the board, nine months off a torn knee ligament — and named two things to watch: the knee, meaning the mobility his value had come to lean on, and the accuracy, which had slipped. Week 1 answered the first and not the second: four scrambles and a rushing touchdown, but 15 of 27, all three deep throws incomplete, and an interception from his own three. Sunday night reversed the second reading: 68 percent complete on 47 throws, three of five deep, no interceptions. The legs were quiet until overtime and then produced a 13-yard scramble inside the 15. One game each way on the accuracy, so it is not settled. The Chiefs are at the Dolphins on Sunday the 20-seventh.
