Patrick Mahomes was accurate against the Chargers but finished without a touchdown pass: 23 of 30, 272 yards, no touchdowns, 1 interception, no sacks. He was worth +2.2 expected points added (EPA) on 32 dropbacks, +0.07 per dropback. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. His completion percentage over expected (CPOE), how often he completed passes against what their difficulty predicted, was +9.4.
The throw that cost him came up 9-3 with 8:37 left in the second quarter. The Chiefs had started at the Chargers 17 after Jack Cochrane's interception. On third and 2 at the 2, Mahomes threw short right for Andrew Armstrong, and Cam Hart intercepted it in the end zone for a touchback, -13.9 points of win probability.
The rest moved the ball. On the first touchdown drive he hit Xavier Worthy for 17 yards on third and 2, +1.7 EPA. His 24-yarder to Travis Kelce set up Kenneth Walker's second touchdown, and he found Noah Gray for 31 yards in the third quarter and Kelce for 12 on third and 11 in the fourth. He also ran for 10 yards on second and 7.
It was a different shape of game from his first four. Across Weeks 1 through 4 he had +29.3 EPA on 143 dropbacks, +0.21 per dropback, 9 touchdown passes, 2 interceptions and a CPOE of +0.8, with at least two touchdown passes in each game.
