  Branch drew his first two targets of the season and caught both for 14 yards: a 3-yarder in the first quarter and an 11-yarder with two minutes left, each thrown behind the line of scrimmage. His day was four returns: a sixty-four-yard kickoff return to the Pittsburgh thirty-two in the second quarter that a holding penalty pulled back to the Atlanta twenty-four — the next snap was intercepted — and punt returns of fourteen, seven and thirteen yards. Atlanta lost 20–13 to the Steelers.

  The fastest player on Atlanta's practice field this spring is going at pick one 93 — because speed is the one rookie skill the market refuses to pay for until it scores.

  The record: third round, pick 79, Georgia, per the Falcons. The combine explains the fascination — four-three-five at five-eight and change, per Pro Football Network — and June matched it: a minicamp screen taken the length of the field, per the team site's Will McFadden. He's the return-job frontrunner, per the club's special-teams preview. On the record, because we don't skip these: an April arrest in Athens on two misdemeanor charges — prosecutors reviewed the video and dropped both in June, per ESPN. Resolved, reported as exactly that.

  The situation: Atlanta's tree has one trunk — Drake London, verified at 68 catches in 12 games — and a new regime: Kevin Stefanski coaching, Tommy Rees calling plays, per the January announcements. The quarterback for now is Tua Tagovailoa, running with the starters while Michael Penix rehabs his knee, per the team site in late June. Speed roles in new offenses are real but small — sweeps, screens, shots, and the returns that appear his to lose.
