The usage gap (snaps versus production)
The usage gap is a player's positional finish minus his positional snap-share rank, both for the 2025 season, so a negative number means he outproduced the snaps he was given and a positive number means he finished behind them. In 2025 Justin Jefferson of the Vikings carried the widest positive gap at +32 — second at his position in snap share, 34th in scoring — and Luther Burden III of the Bears the widest negative at -49, finishing 53rd on the 102nd-ranked snap share. It matters because opportunity is the half that repeats between seasons and efficiency largely is not.
Take where a player finished within his position and subtract where he ranked within it in share of his team's offensive snaps, both across the 2025 season. Both numbers count up from 1, so a negative gap means he finished ahead of his usage and a positive gap means he finished behind it.

Why it matters
This is the number that separates a season built on opportunity from one built on efficiency, and across 2016 to 2025 only the first kind reliably comes back. Snap share repeats at a correlation near point six four; receiving touchdown rate sits near point two one. Justin Jefferson of the Vikings is the instructive case: second at his position in snap share, 34th in scoring, a +32 gap on a player nobody stopped targeting. The gap does not say the offense was wrong to feed him. It says the scoring, not the usage, is the part that went missing.
The counter
A gap is a result, not a process. It is also only computed for players who cleared fourteen games — below that a cumulative snap share and a per-game finish stop measuring the same season, and the difference would be describing an absence rather than an edge.
