Out-of-pocket rate
The pocket is the space the offensive line forms around a quarterback after the snap. Out-of-pocket rate is the share of a quarterback's dropbacks on which FTN's charters had him outside it — whether on a designed rollout or bootleg or by escaping pressure.
FTN's charters mark each dropback on which the quarterback left the pocket before the play ended. Designed movement and improvised escapes count alike; the chart records where he was, not why. The rate divides those dropbacks by all of a passer's charted dropbacks.

Why it matters
Throwing on the move changes everything about a pass — the angles, the reads, the risk. A quarterback who leaves the pocket often is either running an offense built on movement or extending plays his line could not protect, and his passing numbers come from a different kind of play than a passer who stays put.
The counter
The rate blends two opposite stories, a scheme that moves the quarterback on purpose and a line that cannot hold up, and it cannot separate them. It describes how a passer plays more than how well.
