Target share

Target share is the percentage of a team's throws that go to one receiver. Jaxon Smith-Njigba of the Seahawks led 2025 at 35.8%, ahead of Amon-Ra St. Brown at 31.3%.

Count a player's targets, divide by his team's total targets over the same games. A 25% share means one in four throws came his way. It measures the role the offense gave him, not what he did with it.

Why it matters

Target share is the most repeatable thing a receiver does. Across 2016-2025, a pass catcher's targets per game correlated 0.68 year over year and his target share correlated 0.55 across 745 qualifying season pairs — while his receiving touchdowns correlated only 0.36. That gap is the whole argument for buying volume and fading a touchdown season. Share does not care whether the offense is any good, which is why it works better as a floor than a ceiling.

The counter

A large share of a bad passing offense is still a small number of productive throws.
